By growing tatsoi in containers you will get your own food has many advantages over buying produce at the store. It’s cheaper, fresher, and healthier for you and the environment. But how do you start? This guide will show you how to grow your tatsoi right in your garden.
Growing tattoos in containers we can do with the following steps.
- Choosing containers
- Preparing planting media
- Sowing tatsoi seeds
- Doing thinning
- Care
- Wait until harvest time arrives
Like that, very simple isn’t it?
Choose the Right Container.
Start with a good container. You need something sturdy enough to hold soil and water, yet light enough to allow air circulation. A plastic pot is ideal because it’s lightweight and durable. If you live in an area where temperatures drop below freezing during winter months, consider purchasing a greenhouse. These greenhouses provide protection from extreme cold and heat, allowing you to grow plants year round.
I chose to use a polybag because it was enough for me. Because I’m in the tropics, so I don’t need a greenhouse.
Growing media for tatsoi
The media for growing tatsoi in containers should be fertile and of sufficient porosity. We can get it by using a mixture of planting media.
For example, between soil, burnt husks and compost. If we can get all of them, we can mix them in a 1:1:1 ratio.
The mixture of all three is very good, in fact I think we can grow leaf vegetables until harvest without having to add other fertilizers.
However, if you can only get two, no problem. I myself only use a mixture of soil and roasted rice husks. The ratio is 1:1.
Start Seeds Indoors.
To start seeds indoors, first prepare a planting medium by mixing equal parts peat moss and vermiculite together. Then add some fertilizer to the mixture. Next, place the seeds in the planting medium so that each seed has its own space. Cover the seeds with another layer of planting medium. Place the pots in a warm location (70 degrees Fahrenheit) until germination occurs. Once the seeds sprout, move them to a cooler spot (50 degrees Fahrenheit). Keep the temperature at 50 degrees Fahrenheit until the seedlings reach two inches tall. At this point, transplant the seedlings into individual containers.
I suggest that when sowing tatsoi seeds, space the seeds apart. Don’t be put together as one. At least between the seeds are given a distance of 1-2 cm. This way, it will be easier for us to do thinning.
Within 2 – 3 days, the tatsoi seeds have started to germinate. Seeds that are of good quality on average can grow in that time. Unless the seeds have expired, we have to do more treatment.
Thinning for tatsoi
We have to do thinning so that tatsoi will grow optimally. In one container, there should be one tatsoi. If it is more than one, it will be crowded together and eventually less than optimal. That’s the reason why we have to do thinning.
Sometimes, not all seeds can grow 100 percent. Therefore, we have to do embroidery if we want all polybags to be filled with tatsoi.
If we sow in one place, we can properly prepare the number of polybags that must be provided according to the number of tatsoi that grow.
Caring for Tatsoi in containers
List of treatments that need to be done.
- Watering regularly.
- Remove weeds.
- Controlling pests.
That’s it, it’s very easy but it takes patience. Only those who really like gardening can do it. Just kidding, where there is a will there is a way.
I don’t think there is a need for a tutorial for mowing and pulling weeds. But flush carefully if the tatsoi is still small.
For pests, this requires more attention. I am just reminding you. If it’s like this it will be less interesting at all.
This is tatsoi which has been eaten by caterpillars. This happens quickly, less than 3 days.
Many insects often perch and lay eggs on mustard , not only tatsoi , other types of mustard are also the same.
Insects such as dragonflies, butterflies, and flies can do that. They lay eggs on the leaves of the tatsoi. If not controlled from the start, the caterpillars will eat the tatsoi leaves.
If it’s a grasshopper, it will immediately eat the tatsoi . If the grasshopper is big, then the ability to eat will be very greedy.
You can also fertilize your plants with a liquid fertilizer. This will help them grow faster and healthier. To do this, simply add one teaspoon of fertilizer per gallon of water. Be sure to use a good quality fertilizer that has been specifically formulated for indoor gardening.
Harvest Vegetables When They Are Ready.
How long can tatsoi be harvested?
To get the results growing tatsoi in containers like the picture below, it took almost 2 months. Maybe because at the beginning of my planting I was too late to thin.
I will explain it with pictures only.
